Franchi SPAS-12 Shotgun

This Franchi SPAS-12 is a distinctive, combat-focused shotgun developed by the Italian manufacturer Franchi between 1979 and 2000. Its most notable feature is its dual-mode operation, allowing the user to switch between semi-automatic and pump-action modes. The semi-automatic mode provides rapid fire, making it suitable for high-intensity situations, while the pump-action mode is more reliable with lower-powered ammunition, such as non-lethal rounds.

Chambered for 12-gauge shotgun shells, the SPAS-12 typically holds up to eight rounds in its tubular magazine, depending on the size of the shells. Its imposing design is highlighted by a folding metal stock, which offers versatility in handling, and often includes an integrated hook for added stability during one-handed use. The shotgun’s ventilated barrel shroud and angular, robust frame contribute to its iconic, intimidating appearance, making it a favorite in pop culture, especially in action films like Terminator and Jurassic Park.

Although designed primarily for military and law enforcement applications, the SPAS-12 also found use in crowd control and breaching due to its versatility. However, its considerable weight (about 4.4 kg or 9.7 lbs) and complexity, combined with restrictions from U.S. gun laws during the 1990s, led to its eventual discontinuation. Despite this, its unique characteristics and tactical design continue to captivate firearm enthusiasts.
