Button London and North Western Railway Company

Stamped around its edge are the words ‘London and North Western Railway Company.’ A name that once thundered across Victorian Britain.

Buried beneath the earth for generations, this small button once belonged to one of the greatest railway empires. Its steam trains connected London to Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, North Wales and Scotland, carrying coal, steel, mail, soldiers, businessmen, and millions of ordinary people into the modern age.

This button was likely worn by a railway worker sometime between the late 1800s and early 1900s. Perhaps a station master standing proudly on a busy railway platform, a lookout watching the tracks as steam locomotives thundered past or a signalman working beside the railway lines, helping guide trains safely through the heart of industrial Britain.

At its center sits Britannia, the ancient symbol of Britain’s power, industry, and national pride. Chosen to represent the strength and prestige of the railway company during the great age of steam.

A tiny survivor from the golden age of steam railways carrying with it the story of Victorian Britain, industrial power and the railway workers who helped build the modern world.
