Bottle 'Smith & Williams'
The history of Smith & Williams Brewery dates back to 1869 when William Henry Simpkiss established brewing operations associated with the Royal Oak Inn in Brierley Hill.
In 1897, the business was acquired by five partners: Isaac Trevor Elwell, Harry French Williams, John Benton, William Henry Smith and Frederick Hipkiss.
Trading as Elwell, Williams & Company, they operated the Town Brewery in Brierley Hill. The company supplied beer to public houses throughout the Black Country including the Rifle Inn on Church Street, Pensnett. The Rifle Inn has a history dating back to at least 1872, when it was recorded as the Rifleman but by 1875 was known as the Rifle Inn.
The pub subsequently became associated with Elwell, Williams & Company but in 1916 was passed to Smith & Williams following changes within the brewery's partnership.
The historical photograph shows the Rifle Inn with the brewery’s name displayed above the entrance. The sign also advertises a first-prize award at the Brewers’ Exhibition in London.
On 2 July 1934, Smith & Williams was acquired by Julia Hanson & Sons Limited of Dudley. The takeover included approximately sixty licensed premises, bringing an end to Smith & Williams as an independent brewing business. The brewery itself eventually disappeared, but its former site has since taken on a very different role. Today, the site is occupied by Brierley Hill Fire Station.
