This beautiful aqua-blue bottle features the bold, hand-embossed lettering: 

Davenports, Dr. Clarkes Linctus, Wolverhampton, and it’s a late-Victorian patent medicine bottle which holds a fascinating piece of local history.

The man behind it was George Aldersey Davenport, a prominent chemist and druggist operating in Wolverhampton during the late 1800s. He was highly successful, even advertising his shop as a 'Chemist to the Queen' to appeal to upscale shoppers.

But who was Dr. Clarke? Well, he likely didn't exist at all. 

In the 19th century, chemists routinely invented prestigious-sounding doctors to give their homemade syrups an air of medical authority. Because Davenport only sold this mixture in the Black Country, very few of these bottles survive today., making it a truly special find
