At Number 5 Water Lane stood the premises of Knight & Company. This small embossed bottle you see before you once sat on a shelf in that building. 

Its pale green glass and simple lettering were never intended to be decorative. It was a working object, produced for everyday trade.

Around it were warehouses packed with goods from across the British Empire. Merchants, dock workers, clerks, and ship's agents hurried through the surrounding streets. Every day thousands of tons of cargo passed through the nearby docks.

The bottle bears the address: "Knight & Company, 5 Water Lane, Great Tower Street, London E.C."

At the time, this location stood only a few minutes' walk from the Tower of London and the bustling riverfront. 

What the bottle originally contained remains uncertain. It may have held a chemical preparation, a medicinal product, an ink or another specialist commodity. 

Like many small London firms of the era, Knight & Company left few traces behind, and much of their story has been lost to time. The building itself has long since disappeared. 

Yet this small bottle survives carrying with it the name of a forgotten business and the memory of a vanished London street scene.
